Nutrition

Program Description

The nutrition program established for older adults provides one nutritionally balanced meal per day either in a congregate dining setting or through the provision of a home delivered meal. The program also offers monthly nutrition education, nutrition assessment, and nutrition counseling if needed and appropriate. Participants of this program are encouraged to contribute to the cost of their meals and other services, whether congregate or home delivered. Volunteerism is available and encouraged for congregate or home delivery meal services.

Eligibility

Eligibility for Congregate Meal Service

  • Individual is age 60 or older
  • Volunteers to handicapped persons residing in an older adult housing complex where a nutrition site is located
  • Disabled individuals who reside in non-institutional households with and accompany persons eligible for a congregate meal
  • Clients in Adult Day Centers and Alzheimer’s respite programs

Eligibility for Home Delivered Meal Service

  • Individual is aged 60 or older and the spouse of the person is either by reason of illness of incapacity or disability, unable to attend a nutrition site
  • There is no one in the home able to prepare a nutritious meal on a regular basis
  • A non-older adult who is a member of a non-institutional household with an older adult
Who does the Program Benefit / What are the Benefits?

The Nutrition program’s purpose is to:

  • Reduce hunger
  • Promote socialization of older adults
  • Promote the health and wellbeing of older adults to gain access to nutrition and other disease prevention and health promotion services
  • Delay the onset of adverse health conditions which result from poor nutritional health
